I love reading personal, diary-like blog posts because it gives me a lovely insight into the blogger’s mind. It’s really interesting for me to see what they’ve been up to lately, and it sort of feels like I’m chatting away to a friend. I figured maybe some of my readers feel this way too, so I’ve decided to start a series on my blog called “Life Lately”, where I talk about…what’s been going on lately. Go figure!
The Blogging Community in Muscat/Oman
I’ve been more active on Instagram lately than any other social media platform, and I’ve got to say, some Muscat bloggers I’ve come across are nasty. A few days ago I posted stories about how unprofessional the blogging scene in Oman is, because there are a LOT of “influencers” who buy followers, likes, and engagement in order to get sponsorships, collaborations, and free things from brands.
I was happy to see that some big players in the field agreed with me, and it started a bit of a conversation where more Muscat bloggers posted their woes about this topic too. But then I started to get DMs from anonymous Instagram accounts and even real accounts about how so-and-so bought this many followers, and X blogger talks crap about Y blogger but acts all buddy-buddy in person.
That made me so, so mad. It was clear that the people who DMed me didn’t really care about making the Oman blogging scene an honest place where bloggers could share their passions and support each other. They just wanted to be perceived as the better person. (Funnily enough, the blogger that sparked my rant by buying thousands of followers overnight went on to post on their story about how “pissed off” they were that people were buying followers. I mean, if this isn’t the epitome of hypocrisy, what is?)
Eventually, I got fed up to the point where I decided to just keep quiet. But it got me thinking. Are all blogging communities like this? If yes, any goals I have towards Instagram have perished, because I have no interest being surrounded so much dishonesty and selfishness. I will be moving country soon so I hope that this isn’t the case, and that because the community in Oman is so small, bloggers here think they can be shady and get away with it. You tell me, is the Instagram blogging scene like this in your country?
Like I mentioned in the previous paragraph, I’m actually moving from Oman! Blogging aside, I really enjoyed Muscat as a place. I don’t think any other country in the Middle East compares in terms of beauty. The mountains and ocean really blew me away, and during my two months here, I made sure to spend everyday outside or sitting by a window. I hope to visit here again.
And where am I moving? Qatar! I’ve never been there before but I’m really excited to see what it’s like. I’m hoping it’s like Kuwait because I loved Kuwait and I miss it ever so much. Oman was nothing like Kuwait, so it’ll be nice to go back to the feeling of living in a busy city versus laid-back Muscat.
Lately I’ve had this horrid urge to spend money. It’s hilarious because I’m literally broke but I’ve been browsing websites for clothes and fallen in love with so many pieces! My current wishlist is as follows:
01. Loafers. Preferably black. Preferably slide-ons. Preferably Gucci (lol).
02. Straight-cut jeans with a raw-cut hem. I only own skinny jeans and they’re a pain to wear when you feel like being stylish yet comfy. I currently have my eye on a pair of Levi’s but they’re so ridiculously expensive that I’d rather just thrift them the next time I go to the UK.
03. A cape top. I saw Cristal Jennings wear one on Dynasty and I’ve been coveting it ever since.
04. All the chiffon tops. I have a weakness for peplum tops and I have a few, but I really want more in chiffon. Specifically I’ve been looking for one in white, because it would go with EVERYTHING. I have this vision of wearing said top with the aforementioned jeans and loafers and it’s everything.
Current Reading Obsession
I was a huge reader as a kid and even as a teenager, but once I started giving higher-level exams I stopped reading. I tried to get back into it without much success, but a few days ago I downloaded the Apple Books app and bought a few (read: 33) books. I will tell you what I bought but you have to promise you won’t make fun of me.
I bought the entirety of the Gossip Girl series, the Confessions of a Shopaholic series, and the Princess Diaries series. I know I’m not a 12-year-old girl but they’re such easy reads. At the moment I’m getting through one novel a day, so once I’ve finished these books in about a month, I promise to buy something more age-appropriate (and tell you about it in a blog post).
Room Decorating Excitement
To continue with my it’s-not-2012-and-you-are-not-seven-years-younger theme, I’ve been watching a lot of old Zoella videos on YouTube lately. Even though she’s really not my taste now, I loved her content growing up. I was browsing through her archives and came across this video and this video where she shows us her old room, and I ADORED the look of it. It was just the right amount of cozy and personal, and it inspired me to start thinking about my room in my new house. I did publish a post some weeks ago where I revealed a mood board I had created for my new room, so I’ll see what vibe I want to eventually go for. Either way I will definitely be posting the entire process and final results on both the ‘gram and the blog!
