Better Books: Every Bibliophile’s Dream

Hidden in a little basement in the heart of Salmiya is one of the jewels of Kuwait. This little space is probably my favorite in the entire country. Discovered accidently on a lazy September afternoon two years ago, I fell in love with Better Books the minute I lay my eyes on it. It’s a second-hand bookstore which sells books at very affordable prices: any reader’s dream. The store also has its own residential cat called Frosty, and a rescue bird called Kiki who likes selfies and sits on your phone every time you pull it out to take a picture. It’s usually quite empty in there so I like to spend an hour or two just sitting on one of the couches with a book.

Every inch of the space is covered with some sort of intricate detail, from messages and song lyrics written on the walls to shelves and shelves of, well, books. And speaking of books, you’re bound to find one you like. They have thousands neatly categorized by genre, from children’s books to classics and everything in between. They even have a section of collectable first editions, which are absolutely stunning to look at and even nicer to smell (my old-book-scent lovers, where you at?). Some of my recent picks have been We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple, Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen, and Attachments by Rainbow Rowell.

You can find them on their Facebook page.

  1. Wow such a cute little shop! I don’t have many independent book shops near me, but I love going to Waterstones, I feel so relaxed and cosy in there. We were liars is a great book, enjoy!

  2. Thanks for promoting better books and sharing your thoughts on your blog.. What you must do is scribble a note on our walls for the rest of our readers to see!

frosty looks great in these photographs. probably better than her real self!

    good luck with your blog!

  3. This bookstore looks like a great place for all sorts of book lovers. I like that there are different trinkets displayed throughout the store. It’s always nice to see bookstores being well kept – especially in the age of technology. Glad you enjoyed your time out there.
